Boz Scaggs impressed soul purists with his gritty, self-titled 1969 debut album that includes the 12-minute "Loan Me a Dime" blues epic featuring one of guitar god Duane Allman's greatest solos. But it would take several years, and a smoother sound, for Scaggs to become a star. Released in 1976, "Silk Degrees" appealed to soul, rock, pop and even easy listening audiences. The disc produced the Top 40 hits "It's Over," "Lowdown" and "Lido Shuffle" while going on to sell millions of copies. Nearly four decades later, the singer, songwriter and guitarist remains in fine voice. Scaggs' new album, "A Fool to Care," comes out this week and features a sizzling duet with Bonnie Raitt titled "Hell to Pay."

8 p.m. April 9; Van Wezel, 777 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota; $15-$72; vanwezel.org. Scaggs is also performing April 11 at the Tampa Bay Blues Festival
