1 Pearl RS525SCC706 Roadshow 5-Piece Drum Set

The Pearl Roadshow has practically everything you need to begin playing the drums right out of the box. This complete drum kit comes in the New Fusion style and a charcoal metallic finish which makes it really attractive.

In the box, you’ll find 5 drum pieces which includes two cymbals as well. It also comes with other important hardware like a throne, cymbal stand, bass drum pedal, and 2 tom holders.

Getting the drum in your mail might be a little intimidating especially for a beginner. The drum set comes in pieces and you’re expected to set it up yourself. Thankfully, there are instructions and if you still don’t understand, there’s always YouTube videos.

This drum kit comes made from 9-ply poplar shells.

Poplar is a common wood choice for drums in this price range. It’s definitely not the best in the market. However, the difference in sound between poplar and higher end wood choices like maple is really subtle. A beginner or even intermediate player might not even notice it.

How’s the quality of the hardware like? Well, generally, considering the price, the hardware comes with a decent quality. They might not withstand the abuse a more experienced player would give. But for a beginner, they more than suffice.

As to the individual drum pieces: the snare is great with an impressive dynamic range and a consistent sound quality. Just ensure that you maintain them. Cymbals on the other hand, are just barebones but they work.

Altogether, the Pearl Roadshow is a steal for any beginner!

Pearl RS525SCC706 Roadshow 5-Piece Drum Set
Our rating:4.3 out of 5 stars (4.3 / 5)

Pros
  • Can easily modify this to sound like a studio drum set.
  • Standard quality drum pieces and hardware.
  • With proper care and maintenance and a little initiative, this drum set could work for beginners and more advanced players as well.
Cons
  • Tends to produce some slight overtones. So, you’d have to learn tuning right from the start as a beginner.
  • Cymbals do not give the best dynamic range and response.

2 Pearl EXX725S/C 5-Piece Export New Fusion Drum Set

Okay, so what’s up with the Pearl Export Drum Set? First, this does not come with cymbals and it costs a couple of hundred bucks higher than our former drum set. So, keep this in mind while considering this drum set also from Pearl.

By using its Superior Shell Technology, Pearl has successfully created a drum set with an impressive sound quality. This technology means that the shells in this drum set resonate excellently because they come airtight. So, in the end, they give you a much better drum tone.

Of course, you’d have to tune properly.

Another technology that Pearl uses here that impresses us is the Opti Loc mounting system on the toms. So, instead of drilling holes in the two toms and this choice made the tom produce even a much better resonance.

However, beware because it detracts from the versatility you can achieve from this kit.

This comes with poplar wood which makes a couple of people upset at Pearl. Many drummers seem to be of the opinion that this could have come with maple wood. Maple vibrates better due to its increased thickness. However, the difference in tone is subtle and more a matter of personal choice.

As for the stock heads here, they are quite okay, and normal for a beginner drum set. Nonetheless, don’t expect stellar recording quality from them. You can easily fix that by getting better heads and then tuning the drums properly.

All in all, this is a pretty great drum set, despite its few drawbacks.

Pearl EXX725S/C 5-Piece Export New Fusion Drum Set
Our rating:3.8 out of 5 stars (3.8 / 5)

Pros
  • Included bass drum pedal is excellent quality.
  • Hardware is sturdy and durable.
  • Looks aesthetically pleasing.
Cons
  • Does not come with cymbals.
  • Stock heads are not great for superb recording quality.

3 Gammon Percussion Full Size Complete Adult 5 Piece Drum Set

The Gammon Percussion Full Size Complete Adult 5 Piece Drum Set is super affordable at a price tag below $300. In fact, in some quarters, many people recommend this drum set for the kids. Truth is, at this price point, your expectations can only be modest.

That said, this makes a great decision for any beginner on a budget. It’s designed to give the beginner a kit to sufficiently practice with.

We wouldn’t advise you to use this drum set for any recording or stage performance, though. The Pearl Roadshow might be a better option for that. But for practice, this will serve.

And now to sound… The snare and toms actually sound pretty good. The bass drum, on the other hand, is just okay. But you’ll need to tune it a little bit if you want it to sound great. Well, since you’ll be more about playing than getting a perfect sound at the start, this drum set isn’t so bad.

Okay, the cymbals, these ones aren’t great. Now, keep in mind that drum manufacturers don’t usually produce cymbals. So, you find that higher end drum kits don’t include any cymbal. You should now understand why the cymbals here don’t sound so great.

Thankfully though, the hi-hat sounds better. And since you’ll be using this far more times than you’d use the crash cymbal, that’s great news.

Lastly, the Gammon Percussion Full Size Complete Adult 5 Piece Drum Set comes with pretty sturdy hardware. They can be sure to last as long as you’re careful with them as you should.

Gammon Percussion Full Size Complete Adult 5 Piece Drum Set
Our rating:4.1 out of 5 stars (4.1 / 5)

  • Sound quality is decent.
Cons
  • Cymbals are low quality. Thankfully, they are replaceable.
  • Not great for stage performance.

4 Tama New Imperialstar 5 Piece Complete Drum Kit

Some of the best sounding drum sets in the world of drums are Tama’s. The Tama New Imperialstar 5 Piece Complete Drum Kit is one of those great sounding drum kits. It’s more expensive than the peal Export Series. However, it’s one of Tama’s cheapest drum kits.

Now, let’s see if this kit is worth the money.

This drum set is really beautiful with its hairline blue finish. In fact, under lighting, this hairline blue finish shines even more beautifully making your drum set look stunning.

Tama uses poplar here with precision-crafted bearing edges. These precision-crafted bearing edges make your drum resistant to heavy beatings. So, yeah, you could say this drum set loves to take a beating.

Now, sound quality here is great even though this is just poplar and not maple or birch. But then again, this is entry-level category. All the same, for this category, the bright, focused tone poplar gives satisfies most players.

We found the toms to give a warm sound with a sustain that’s decent, even though they aren’t exactly crystal.

Nonetheless, the sound from the bass is big and booming. But you can easily control this by stuffing the inside with some padding.

Now, the best part of this drum kit, is probably its snare drum. It’s sharp and attacking with a much higher quality than you can find in most entry-level drums.

Tama New Imperialstar 5 Piece Complete Drum Kit
Our rating:5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Pros
  • Super snare drum!
  • Double-braced, sturdy, durable hardware.
  • Bass drum pedal features a metal base which isn’t common in entry-level drum sets.
  • It is well known in drum circles that Tama drum sets last really long.
  • Considering the quality of the parts in this set, this drum set is actually quite affordable.
Cons
  • The omni-sphere tom mounting system makes this frustrating for intermediate or experienced players. Not so bad for beginners, though.
  • Stock heads could be better.

The Mendini by Cecilio Complete Full Size 5-Piece Adult Drum Set is not just for adults. It’s also a great drum set choice for the beginning teenager. It comes as a complete set with 5 pieces. It’s also pretty affordable especially for a full-sized adult drum kit.

This drum kit sounds great with its poplar shells. The shells come laminated to give the drum set a level of durability. Plus, the sound is great and warm, something that will definitely captivate your audience once you hear this.

This drum set comes with everything you need to begin playing and practicing the drums right out of the box. It might not be good enough for a professional jam. But for practice or simply messing around, this drum set is good enough.

It comes in 7 color choices which leave you spoiled for choice.

Also, the hardware here is pretty decent quality. And with a good quality construction, you can be sure that the hardware will last as long as possible. It definitely will take a good level of beating however long you use this.

The best part of this drum set though is its budget price. It’s within the easy reach of any beginner. But beware though, it will definitely not give you the level of quality some of the higher priced drum sets on our review will give you.

7 Pearl Roadshow RS525WFC/C31 5-Piece Drum Set (Rock Style)

The Pearl Roadshow RS525WFC/C31 5-Piece Drum Set is absolutely great especially for the beginner. Of course, you can trust Pearl to give the performance of a lifetime when it comes to its drums.

The hardware here is pretty high quality and is also solidly constructed. The cymbals, snare, and hi-hat stands are quite strong too. Plus, they also come with a solidly balanced tripod base.

It’s also great to know that the stands and legs here come double-braced. This means that all parts will hold their own whatever pressure your performance brings. So, in other news, the Pearl Roadshow hardware stands out from the rest in its class. It’s a perfect match for the heavy-hitting drummer.

The snare drum is also pretty good too and captures everything from the softest notes to the loudest. Also, there’s a lot of power and attack to enjoy from this snare. Plus, it’s still sensitive enough to be heard even at low volumes.

We also love the bass drum and its impressive bass frequencies.

Altogether, Pearl impresses us once again. This drum is beautiful and does great in the performance department.

8 Ludwig Accent Drive 5-Piece Drum Set

With its black color, this drum set looks exquisite. It’s something you’ll be proud to use on stage as it is quite attractive. Plus, it only takes a few hours to completely set this up. It does not come with assembly instructions, though. Fortunately, you can easily get that from the internet.

In the hardware department here, you get drumsticks, although you don’t get a throne. So, you’re going to have to get your own drum throne yourself. Be careful not to improvise with a kitchen stool though as it won’t give you the same feel and comfort as a drum throne.

Best Beginner Drum Set Buying Guide

Now, you’ve got to be careful when going out to buy your first drum set. Here’s one mistake a lot of beginners make. They major on the minor details that don’t really count for them at that point in their drumming journey.

To help you avoid making such mistakes, here are the top 4 factors you must consider when getting a beginner drum set. The rest you can figure out on your own as you grow in your skills and musical journey.

  • Shell packs or complete drum sets.
  • Number of pieces to get.
  • Double or single bass drum.
  • Shell sizes.

Now, to discuss these factors in detail

Drum Set

Shell Packs Vs Complete Drum Sets

Most pictures of drum sets you see online usually look fully set up. So, you find drums, cymbals, and some hardware. However, you might not know, but some of these drum sets actually do not come with cymbals or hardware.

These drum packages without cymbals and hardware are referred to as shell packs.

Typically, shell packs are of a higher quality than complete drum sets. And same goes for cymbals and hardware you purchase individually. Most advanced drummers already have their preferences so they typically prefer to purchase their pieces individually so they can get exactly what they want.

On the other hand, it might be more preferable for beginners to go with complete drum sets. Complete drum sets are cheaper. And since beginners don’t know their way around drums, brands, and their own preferences yet, complete drum sets are more preferable for them.

Number of Pieces

The decision for this depends on a number of things. What style of music do you favor? Who’s your drum hero? Your drum set could come with 4 pieces like jazz players love or 30 pieces like rock god, Neil Peart prefer.

Now, whatever your preference is, it’s always best to go for a simple 4 or 5 piece drum kit as a beginner. Then you can add to the kit as your skills advance. It’s simple logic. If you can’t play simple beats yet, then you have no need for loads of toms. Makes sense, right?

Double or Single Bass?

Now, a load of toms might not be advised for a beginner. A second bass, though, might not be such a bad idea for a beginner drum set. However, a second bass might be best for metal heads or for those with drum heroes that play double bass drum sets.

Besides that, a second bass is generally not best for beginners. Instead, a double bass drum pedal might be a better solution than a double bass set up. This will allow you play one bass drum with both feet.

best Beginner Drum Set

Shell Sizes

Advanced drummers are usually extremely picky with the dimensions of the drums in their setup. For the newbie, though, they need only bother themselves with two options. Those are:

  • The Rock/Standard Sized Kits: These usually have larger shells and they are best for heavy rock and roll.
  • Jazz/Fusion Sized Kits: These come smaller in shell size and are better for light playing.

In comparison to jazz kits, standard kits come with lower fundamental pitches, louder volume, and looser heads which feature slower stick response.

Also, in dimensions, standard kits usually feature the following drum sizes:

  • Kick: 22 x 14 inches.
  • Rack toms: 12 x 8 inches and 13 x 9 inches.
  • Floor tom: 16 x 16 inches.
  • Snare: 14 x 6 inches.

Budget, and Recommended Beginner Drum Set Brands

Beginner drum sets usually come at a price between $600 and $1000. If it’s lower than $600, then it might just be a toy. If it’s higher than $1000, then just consider buying your drum pieces separately.

Solid brands to consider for adult beginners are Pearl, Ludwig, Yamaha, and Tama. Ludwig also carries junior kits for children like the Ludwig Breakbeats, Ludwig Pocket, and Ludwig Junior.

Conclusion

Our best beginner drum set goes to the Pearl RS525SCC706 Roadshow 5-Piece Drum Set. And it’s not just to us. In nearly every drumming circle, the Pearl RS525SCC706 Roadshow 5-Piece Drum Set is regarded as the best drum set for beginners.

It’s also great that this drum set is moderately priced. It’s not super cheap but it is quite affordable especially for its features and performance.
