In the 812, Bose has installed a flexible array. This means that you can control the vertical coverage and arrange the sound into four different projection shapes. The speaker is packed with power using eight high/mid 2.25” drivers giving you a clean power sound. These are complemented by a 12” low-frequency driver. They are all arranged vertically.

This is achieved with a flexible baffle that will change into four shapes. The shape of the EQ is automatically altered to compensate. Bose can always be relied on to deliver a great sound, and these speakers deliver that.

The benefits of using a line array system for sound distribution are well-known. This is a speaker that gives you that option that before was only available using large rigs.

Built for the road…

This speaker is certainly robust and made of rugged composite material. It carries 1000 watts of power-driven by two amps. One for the low-frequency driver and the other for the array speakers. Better separation of the frequencies is achieved using a low crossover point. They weigh in at 44 pounds and are therefore easily transportable.

It has two channels for input, both with separate gain controls and Line level mic switch.

There is no doubt Bose has produced a great speaker with this model and must be considered as one of the best DJ speakers available.

2 Mackie Thump12A

Mackie is well-known in the world of sound for producing quality equipment at a cost-effective price. This speaker is a good example of that.

This is a powered speaker that will put out 1300 watts of power or 350 watts RMS. This is delivered through a 12” woofer and a 1.4” titanium tweeter. The sound is designed to project the bottom end, and the bass performance is very prominent.

For this, it uses what Mackie refer to as Dynamic Bass response. This is centered around a more efficient improved amplifier that uses a higher voltage supply.

Four modes of operation…

It is designed with built-in speaker settings and offers four different modes of operation. With this option, you can prepare for the type of venue and speaker use you will require. Modes are selected with the simple push of a button. The controls are situated on the rear of the speaker, along with gain controls.

This speaker has some extra very useful features. They have two built-in channel mixers that are equipped with Vita preamps. If you are planning to use either just one or two inputs, the onboard mixer allows you to plug straight into the speaker.

3 Behringer Eurolive B210D Active 200-Watt 2-Way PA Speaker System

There are some things you can always rely on when you see the brand name, Behringer. They produce some quality equipment. Products are well-made and do the job effectively, and they are always cost-effective.

This speaker is a good example of a Behringer product, Well made with a tough composite enclosure it is compact yet very strong and also lightweight at under 20 pounds. It is, therefore, easy to carry.

Wide projection…

Behringer has ensured there is quality inside the box. It has a ten-inch woofer that gives a powerful deep bass sound. Supporting this, a 1.25” tweeter with an aluminum diaphragm. This combination pumps out around 200 watts of power using its Class D technology amp. Situated at the front is a conical horn. This ensures that the sound is projected to a wide area.

It has a Mic/Line input with its own volume control situated on the rear of the cabinet. Also located here is an EQ and level control.

Being so portable is a major point with this speaker. It is strange though having made it so easy to move around they didn’t give it a handle. Only a small point but relevant if you need to carry it around.

Efficient with good bass…

Given the size and its given power rating, this speaker delivers a very efficient performance. The volume is quite enough for smaller venues, and the sound is very good. The bass especially is very pronounced. Quite a surprise for what is a small cabinet. When compared to some other speaker’s power ratings, this seems small. For the right size venue, it is perfect.

Of course, apart from the great sound and features, the cost makes it very attractive. We doubt you will find many speakers of this quality at this price point. It is very good value for money.

8 Yamaha DXR15 Powered Speaker Cabinet

As soon as Yamaha enters the arena, you know it’s getting serious. Yamaha doesn’t make bad products. This speaker is made in China, and it is excellent.

It is a well-built speaker made from tough ABS Polymer with a metal wire mesh grille. The design is plain and simple. It’s quite heavy, weighing nearly sixty pounds in a cabinet that is only 20.8 by 18.2.

Like it loud?

It is quite clear that Yamaha has looked at what a DJ needs and produced a speaker to fulfill the need. One of those things is volume, and the DXR15 has plenty of that. Each speaker has a 2-way design that has a powerful 15” woofer. This is powered by an 1100 watt amp. This makes it a great speaker for a DJ that might be playing larger venues.

The sound is powerful, but it is also crisp with good mids and a strong bottom end. And onboard, it has a three channel mixer and also has an EQ control. It has a well-tuned Digital signal Processor that gives you a transparent dynamic control.

9 JBL EON615

This speaker from JBL has several potential uses. Its design, though, is principally aimed at the DJ. The 615 is a two-way bass-reflex cabinet housing a 15” woofer. There is also an amp capable of producing a massive 1000 watts and SPL of 127dB. That is going to wake up the neighbors.

It is built using an injection molding technique using quality Polymer. The cabinets have been given rounded edges as this reduces bass trap and a smoother flow of air within the cabinet. This creates the ideal space for the best acoustic resonance.

A flatter response…

The sound generated by this speaker might not be to everybody’s taste. The frequency response is flatter than you might normally find in live performance speakers. They are more akin to studio monitors with their sound style. The mids are prominent whilst the bass and treble are on hold a little.

One interesting feature you don’t often find with speakers of this kind is the addition of Bluetooth capability. This version 4 addition supports iOS and Android devices and has an interface to allow you to control the master volume.

Rugged design…

Lightweight and easy to transport with a tough design and plenty of features. This puts this JBL speaker right in the frame for the best set of DJ speakers.

JBL EON615

Our rating:3.9 out of 5 stars (3.9 / 5)

  • Plenty of power at a reasonable price.

10 Monoprice 8-inch Powered Studio Monitor Speakers

Monoprice is a company from California that has been in existence for just twenty years. What you won’t get from them is anything particularly special, but what you will get is a product with a cost-effective price.

This commitment to keeping it simple is clearly demonstrated in the design of these speakers.

To call them rather uninspiring is not unfair. They are rather ordinary looking. A very conventional-looking black cabinet and very conventional speaker layout. This will not be a problem for some. Why should it? It’s what they sound like at the end of the day.

Kevlar fiber cone…

The cabinets hold an 8” woofer that has a Kevlar fiber cone, and to provide a good dampening effect is rubber mounted. The tweeter is the usual silk dome design that has magnetic shielding. The woofer has a high-temperature voice coil that will allow it to continue to operate effectively in long periods of use.

There isn’t a great deal in the way of features built-in though there is a 4-way selector switch. This is situated on the rear of each speaker and allows sound adjustments to suit the environment. Each cabinet has two amps with an output total of 120 watts RMS. One 80 watt amp drives the woofer while a 40-watt amp powers the tweeter.

Flat as a pancake…

The performance of these speakers is adequate and certainly not award-winning. They were not designed to be. The flat frequency response reminds you more of studio monitors than something a DJ would use. That will suit some users’ tastes, we are sure.

An adequate pair of speakers that are priced at quite a bit less than one speaker of some manufacturers. You haven’t got that quality, though — decent value for a budget range of speakers.

Monoprice 8-inch Powered Studio Monitor Speakers

Our rating:5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Pros

  • The simple design and operation will appeal to some.
  • Cost-effective price point.

Cons

  • Some will want far more in the way of power and sound options.

Finding The Best DJ Speakers

Not an easy task. If you are a working DJ, unless you have a residency, the speakers will need to be portable. You don’t want them too heavy, and they need some adequate handles. Some consideration will need to be given to the size of the venues in which they will be used.
